Board Games and Feminism at Witch House

Witch House has been one of our favourite finds in Taipei: relaxed and unpretentious, it is a cafe, live music venue, board gamer’s paradise, and feminist movement all rolled into one.

The first thing you notice about Witch House are the bra-wearing chairs and hilarious menu. There’s only one English menu, and it absolutely killed us. Right from the start, Witch House warns us that anyone violating their rules–consuming outside food and drinks, or engaging in nudist acts or groups sex–will be “prematurely ejaculated.” Later, they reassure us that no connection has been made between their mixed herb tea and recurring birth deformities in local residents. Oh, and when their boss “feels like f*ck yea,” they have cake. Can’t argue with that!

Oh, and ladiesif you can do ten push ups, you qualify for a 10% discount. Great news.

Witch House’s real pull, though, is their huge selection of board games–an entire section at the back is dedicated to them, both for sale and to play for free inside. Considering that we have paid upwards of $300 at other board game cafes just to play, this is an incredible deal.

We hadn’t originally intended on staying for long, but we quickly became wrapped up in this hilarious card game while we sipped on our drinks.

If you’re looking for a fancy coffee, Witch House is not the place to go. However, we found our Irish coffee ($180), latte ($150), and iced cappuccino ($150) to be well-made and satisfying, and the mugs they were served in reminded us of hanging out back at our house. The same goes for Witch House’s interior, which was not designed to win any artsy awards, but has a welcoming, home-y feel that put us at ease as soon as we stepped in. There are so many beautiful cafes to choose from in Taipei, but it was actually very refreshing to chill in a place that hasn’t been instagrammed a thousand times.

All in all, hanging out at Witch House was the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. On Sundays between 2pm – 8pm there is actually a board game coach that can help you understand the instructions and improve your skill in both English and Chinese. On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, there are indie live music acts starting at 9:30pm. Tickets are $350 including a drink, and you can find their events schedule here.

Check out their menu down below:

What’s the vibe?

Relaxed, woke board game cafe with a hilarious menu. Everyone is welcomed, regardless of gender or age. Depending on the day, you can expect to see a lot of students and/or families here.

Worth it?

Absolutely, as long as you’re going for the board gamesit’s still a nice place to come get a coffee, but this is what makes it special. There is a minimum spend of $150, but in most cases ordering a drink will cover that.

Would you go back?

You better believe it! This is a great option when it’s raining, too cold, or too hot to go outsideor if you just really want to play some board games.
