Art and Botany Workshops at this Adorable Succulent Shop & Cafe

Succuland is a gorgeous little shop in and cafe in Da’an that specializes in succulents, cacti, and a variety of homeware and accessories. The cafe inside is small, with limited options for both drinks and desserts, but the atmosphere of being surrounded by hundreds of little plants makes it worth it.

Succuland is firstly and foremostly a plant store, boasting an impressive collection of cacti and succulents only. You can browse their selections of unpotted plants outdoors before heading inside for the rest. If you’re solely interested in shopping for succulents, you can probably find them for cheaper at Jianguo Weekend Flower Market, where small ones are around $100. At Succuland you should expect to pay upwards of $190, but the plant pots they have are way nicer than the ones at the Flower Market, which can be really tacky. If you’re trying to turn your home into the millennial paradise that you see on Instagram, Succuland is probably your best best.

The shop inside has some gorgeous, modern homeware, plant pots, and various plant-themed accessories. Think geometric everything, with lots of brass and exposed cement. We loved the hanging baskets, cactus-shaped ring holders and mini magnetic succulent pots for your fridge.

In addition to homeware, they also have some plant-themed arts & craft supplies as well as succulent soil and books. We actually wished we’d known about the soil, as our succulent from the Flower Market died a very long, sad death a while ago that probably could have been avoided with proper care. Oops.

We’ve never bought anything from their store, but always thought that it would be a nice place to buy a gift for someone. Prices are on the high side but they still have some affordable options. If you’re interested in products and pricing, they also have an online shop that you can check out before you go to save you some time.

The cafe is called Cafe Sind, and for some reason seems to be separate from Succuland itself. They have a couple of options for drinks like drip coffee, regular coffees, and teas, as well as a small selection of cakes and tarts. We enjoyed the coffee when we tried it before, and didn’t feel that it was too overpriced for the setting. Anyway, the real attraction is sitting amongst the plants.

Cafe Sind doesn’t have much space in terms of seating — just a few tables dotted around as well as one couch. They tend to close the cafe when they have a workshop going on, which we discovered on two different occasions, so you may want to send them a Facebook message before you go to check and see. It can get pretty busy on weekends, and you might end up having to wait for a table, or going to HEXA next door, another very modern, cafe-slash-homeware place.

In addition to the shop and cafe, Succuland offers an array of art and botany workshops that you can sign up for here. The workshops are usually priced around $2000-$3000, and offer some interesting choices like pottery, jewelry making, wreath-making, and embroidery. They also have courses where you can make your own containers, such as geometric cement pots or mosaic glass houses, and plant your own succulents. Some of these courses are specifically for parents and children, which is an cute idea for a family date. When we asked them if we could come despite only speaking a little Chinese they told us it wouldn’t be a problem because we can use body language. We’re guessing they probably don’t speak much English, but you’d still be able to participate despite the language barrier. We’ve never tried the workshops, but love the idea because it’s something interesting to do, and you get a unique product at the end of it.

All in all, Succuland is a great little spot to kill an afternoon or shop for a cute gift. There’s something really comforting about being surrounded by a bunch of plants, which is why floral cafes like Succuland and White Flower are among some of our favourites in Taipei. The addition of the workshops makes it quite a unique little venue that’s nice to have in our arsenal of things to do.

What’s the vibe?

Calm, green space with lots of cool products to browse through. Great place for gift shopping.

Worth it?

The regular drinks aren’t expensive ($100 for an americano), and the atmosphere is worth paying for. If you’re interested in shopping, it’s best to check out the online store first to have an idea of what’s on offer and for how much for, so you aren’t disappointed if you make the trek over. We’ve never tried the workshops, but they look like a fun activity if it’s something you’re interested in, despite being on the pricey side.

Would you go back?

We stop by when we’re in the area, but White Flower is still our favourite of the two plant-themed cafes we’ve tried so far due to the heavenly smell of dried flowers. We do like Succuland, though!
