Visit The First Major LGBTQ Art Exhibit in Asia

After a landmark court ruling in May 2017 put Taiwan on track to become the first place in Asia to legalize gay marriage, the socially-progressive city of Taipei is testing new boundaries with what it believes to be the first major LGBTQ-themed art exhibit in Asia.

“Spectrosynthesis – Asian LGBTQ Issues and Art Now” features more than 50 works of various mediums (from paintings to videos) from the past half-century, by 22 ethnically-Chinese artists. Curator Sean Hu said he hopes the exhibition will promote a better understanding of issues facing the LGBTQ community in Asia, and leads to a greater respect of different sexual orientations across the continent.

This groundbreaking exhibit is showing at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (MOCA) until November 5, 2017. It’s timed perfectly to last through Taipei Pride. Check out some of the artwork here:

What’s the vibe?

Quiet art gallery with eclectic paintings, sculptures, and videos. Not suitable for children due to its explicitly sexual nature.

Worth it?

Yes.

With an entrance fee of only NT$50, this exhibit is absolutely worth visiting – especially due to its historic significance. The artwork is ambitious, diverse, and thought-provoking.

Would you go back?

Maybe.

If you take your time wandering through the exhibit, it’s very manageable to see all of the artwork in a single visit. But I’d be happy to bring friends who haven’t been and experience it again.
