Cocktails in an Outdoor Beer Garden at Plan B

Plan B is a European restaurant in Zhongxiao Dunhua with an excellent outdoor seating area. We had walked past it several times before while shopping in the area, but it wasn’t until our friends recommended their patio that we decided to stop by. Having glanced at their reviews on Google, we noticed people were pretty divided on their food, so we decided not to risk it and stuck to ordering drinks.

The beer garden at Plan B is really excellent — spacious and sunny, with an outdoor bar. We haven’t come across many beer gardens where you can day drink in Taipei, so we had high hopes. In reality, it turned out that we were the only ones interested in day drinking, or day anything, really. We were the only customers for hours, and the staff looked somewhat taken aback when we checked the menu and immediately ordered sangria. It was available in red or white, by the glass ($280) or the jug ($880 for 770ml). We ordered a jug — go hard or go home, right?

The sangria was pretty good — nothing special, but decent nonetheless — and we ended up thoroughly enjoying ourselves in the sunshine. However, this was largely due to our group getting along well with each other, and it occurred to us that we would be having a lot less fun if we didn’t bring the party with us. The tables started to fill up after a while, and the atmosphere improved with each additional group.

All things considered, we did enjoy ourselves at Plan B, but wouldn’t go back during the day unless we had a fun group of friends that could counteract any awkwardness we would encounter by being the only ones drinking. The beer garden was lovely and the drinks were about the same that we would pay anywhere else in the area, which makes it a pretty decent option for cocktails in the sunshine. That being said, we doubt we would come here for food — it’s not cheap, and the mixed reviews on Google do not say much for its quality. Also, we found the decor inside to be a bit strange. Still, we were glad we finally visited, and will definitely keep the patio in mind for future day drinking adventures.

Check out their menu, which we pulled from their Facebook. The sangria is not on it, but we confirmed with them that it is still available.

What’s the vibe?

An upscale European restaurant with some pretty questionable interior design. They have a fantastic beer garden that has a lot of potential, but unfortunately doesn’t seem to be much used. It’s not cheap, but the price wasn’t surprising considering its location.

Worth it?

It all depends. We enjoyed ourselves because we had a great group that was intent on drinking sangria and having fun, but it could have been an awkward, lonely disaster. We can’t speak for the food, but you might want to check what other people have to say about it on Google before you order.

Would you go back?

It’s definitely on our radar, but we wouldn’t go back without a big group of friends.
