Fantastic Foot Massages in Comfortable Surroundings at Omotesando

We’ve been to a number of massage places in Taipei (our favourites being the blind massage place in Taipei City Mall and the Nanjing Fuxing branch of this blind massage chain), and while we love some authentic, reasonably-priced blind massages, sometimes we want something a little more relaxing. This is how our friends first convinced us to visit Omotesando near Nanjing Fuxing: they gushed about their comfortable chairs, clean, quiet environment, and highly skilled masseuses. With a little research, we quickly discovered that Omotesando has an eye-opening 4.9 rating on Google, with over 1000 reviews. We were sold.

The reception staff at Omotesando are helpful and friendly and speak some English and Japanese. This is clearly a place geared towards Japanese tourists, and the service, cleanliness, and price reflect that. Still, for a nicer massage place, it’s actually not that much more expensive. A thirty-minute foot massage at the nearby Xin An Centre will set you back $400, while a forty-minute foot massage at Omotesando costs $660. The price difference isn’t much, but it isn’t nothing, either.

The superior quality of service is immediately evident as soon as you enter Omotesando. After confirming the kind of massage you want with the receptionist, your masseuse will usher you out of your shoes and to the massage area. If you are wearing a dress or a skirt, you will be given a pair of trousers. If you need to use the bathroom, it’s the first door on your right as you enter. The bathroom is beautiful and clean.

Chairs for foot massages at Omotesando are ridiculously large, plushy, and comfortable. There is an individual screen attached to each, which you can connect to your phone by USB cable. The stools pull back to reveal a basin where you can soak your feet for a few minutes. If you choose to upgrade your first massage to include a 20-minute neck and shoulder rub (we highly recommend that you do, as it’s surprisingly thorough — it costs $990 in total), your masseuse will start on that first while your feet are in the water. If you don’t like a firm massage, we recommend telling the receptionist as you first come in. Although the masseuses are highly skilled, we’ve had a massage so firm that we literally jumped out of our seat. We’ve also had more gentle ones, so it depends on the masseuse that you get. It’s definitely best to specify from the start.

Other than that, the massages here are excellent. The masseuses seriously know their stuff and put your comfort first — first-time visitors are given the chance to rate the masseuse they got to receive a free sample of massage oil, and we imagine this keeps the quality of each massage quite high. Everything from the comfortable chairs, to the soft piano music in the background, the hushed tones of customers and the total silence of masseuses, to the warm compress of towels on your legs right at the end is wonderful. If you want a slightly more luxurious experience without breaking the bank, this is the place for you.

Overall, we’ve been impressed by Omotesando each time we’ve visited, and it’s fast becoming one of our go-to massage places. It’s nowhere near as cheap as some of the other massage places we frequent, but the relaxing atmosphere, great service, and comfort make up for the difference in price. We’ve also heard that they do great full-body massages here, but we haven’t had the chance to try it out yet. Their facilities look beautiful — there’s even an outdoor area for massages, that’s probably really nice about three days out of the year. Definitely another reason to return!

What’s the vibe?

Polished massage place in Nanjing Fuxing. Customers are a mix of locals and tourists. Lots of people were there by themselves.

Worth it?

It’s not as cheap as other places, but the overall experience is much nicer. Blind massage places are a great, affordable option, but they aren’t designed to be relaxing. This is a more luxurious, comfortable option.

Would you go back?

We’ve already been back, but yes. We’d take friends and family next time, too!
