Morton’s Steakhouse: Upscale Dining with Views of Taipei 101

Have a special occasion that calls for indulgence? Morton’s Steakhouse, an upscale chain restaurant from Chicago, is a great option for an upscale dining experience — in addition to quality food and impeccable service, it offers a first-rate view of Taipei 101 from the 45th floor of Breeze Xinyi.

We checked out Morton’s on a Saturday evening in November to celebrate a birthday. We’d called to make a reservation the day before, and ended up booking for later in the evening (no tables were available at our preferred time).

After taking the elevator all the way up to the 45th floor of the Breeze Centre, we were greeted at the entrance to the classy, modern restaurant. The lights inside were dimmed to offer the best city view beyond the windows, which stretched most of the width of the building. Taipei 101 was visible from nearly all the tables, and we were luckily seated next to the windows, making it even better.

Immediately after ordering we were presented with this free loaf of warm bread, fresh from the oven. It was soft, fluffy, and so heavenly with whipped butter melted into it.

The loaf was huge, but we devoured most of it. After slicing through, our server quickly swept the crumbs off our table and traded it out for a smaller plate. The service throughout our meal was phenomenal.

Our first order was onion rings (NT$298). They were HUGE and came in a large stack with Thai cream sauce and ketchup. They were perfectly crispy and the sauce was delicious.

The Bacon & Onion Macaroni and Cheese (NT$398) was simply divine. Beneath the baked surface lay a treasure trove of warm, gooey goodness. The swamp of cheese and macaroni was infused with delicious bacon and onion, creating a rich side dish — so rich we couldn’t finish it. The staff was happy to box the rest to go (and it made an especially good midnight snack later that night).

We ordered a single 12 oz filet mignon (NT$2188) for both of us, and without skipping a beat they asked if we’d like it cut in half. Each half of the steak came on its own plate. This was a better deal because we each got 6 ounces for only $1049 — much less than the $1588 we’d each pay for individual 6 oz steaks.

The steak, cooked to a medium, was still slightly bloody. We didn’t mind that it was on the rarer side, as the meat was tender and basically melted in our mouths. Oh so satisfying.

Our entree and sides all arrived at the same time. We’d been wondering if we’d ordered enough food, but we ended up stuffing ourselves, unable to finish (until we took it home later).

We had informed the staff we were celebrating a birthday, and they were nice enough to bring this free dessert — a soufflé with cream — complete with a personalized message made of chocolate sauce. They also took our photo with the dessert and Taipei 101 in the background, then gave us the Polaroid later! To be honest, we didn’t love the soufflé, but it was still a nice touch after dinner.

After dessert, we were invited to the outdoor patio to enjoy the view and take photos of the city. There’s also a bar if you’re in the mood to continue drinking. Though we didn’t stay too long, this was a great way to round off a delightful meal.

What’s the vibe?

Upscale steakhouse with incredible service and stunning views of Taipei 101 from the 45th-floor restaurant and patio bar.

Worth it?

That really depends. Obviously, this place isn’t cheap, with entrees starting at around NT$1000 and climbing quickly in price from there, up to the NT$8000 – NT$10,000 range. You’re paying for the experience in addition to the food, though — the service is incredible, the atmosphere is lovely, and the views are breathtaking. For us, it was a nice treat to celebrate a special occasion, and we managed to keep the bill somewhat reasonable by splitting an entree and ordering a couple sides.

Would you go back?

Probably not, as there are countless other fine-dining restaurants (with views) that we’d love to try. But we wouldn’t protest another meal at Morton’s if the occasion called for it!
