[PERMANENTLY CLOSED] Healthy, Home-Cooked Vegetarian Food at Messypot Veggie Eatery

Sometimes you just want an easy, fast meal that doesn’t break the bank or smash your diet to smithereens. This is exactly what the founders at Messypot Veggie Eatery were thinking when they opened up their little restaurant right next to Technology Building MRT station: they were sick of going out to eat and only finding salty, oily options, so they decided to open up their own place where they could offer healthy homecooked food at affordable prices.

Not being vegetarians ourselves, Messypot didn’t really come across our radar until one of our friends pointed out the incredibly high rating it has on Google — 4.9 out of around 50 reviews. Figuring that anything with a rating that high must be good, we decided to check it out one day when we were in the area.

The restaurant itself is quite small, with a clean, minimalist style. It is run by two pescatarian ladies who cook everything themselves, including baking their own bread daily, which you can try at the counter. The menu changes every day — usually, there are around five main dishes on rotation, all vegetarian, at least two of which are guaranteed to be vegan.

You can select a combination of mains and choose to add bread, noodles, or rice. They have great value set meals, and a la carte options like couscous and soup.

On the day that we went, they had (from left to right) vegetables in a cheesy sauce, satay tofu, Indian curry, mixed vegetables with an optional honey-mustard sauce, and rice noodles with tofu and vegetables.

Here we got satay tofu, vegetables with honey mustard sauce, and the noodles. The satay tofu was out of this world — the tofu was soft and flavourful without having (or needing) the strong satay flavour that we were accustomed to. The veggies were cooked perfectly, the drizzle of sweet honey mustard sauce bringing out a depth to their flavour. The noodles were great too, and the portion was very generous. This meal was incredibly light but satisfying.

We also got the Indian curry with vegetables and coconut turmeric rice. The Indian curry was amazing — very flavourful and rich without being heavy or greasy in any way, and the coconut turmeric was absolutely divine.

We lucked out on the last meal — some of the dishes were almost done, so we were able to cram a bunch of half portions on one plate. In addition to other things that we had tried already, this gave us the chance to try the couscous (amazing — light and slightly sweet) and the cheesy vegetables, which felt indulgent but not over-the-top.

We topped our meal off with glasses of homemade lemonade, which was actually the real star of the show. It had the absolute perfect balance of sweetness, and it completely satisfied our sugar craving while leaving us with zero guilt. This is how everything should be!

All in all, we really loved Messypot Veggie Eatery. It’s a lovely neighbourhood joint with fresh, healthy food that isn’t too expensive, and a very relaxed atmosphere. We felt very full and satisfied after our meal, but not at all weighed down or uncomfortable. The two owners were lovely, spoke perfect English, and did everything in their power to make us feel welcome.

What’s the vibe?

Relaxed little shop selling homemade vegetarian/vegan food and drinks.

Worth it?

Yes! We loved the concept, food, and owners.

Would you go back?

Absolutely! This kind of small business is the one we want to support the most, and we can’t wait to try all of their other delicious dishes.
