Traditional Chinese Architecture at Lin an Tai Historical House

Lin An Tai Historic House is a beautiful traditional-style mansion located near Yuanshan MRT in Zhongshan. Despite being gorgeous and free, for some reason it is often overlooked on trips to Taipei, and rarely features in guides to the city.

We would imagine that one of the reasons Lin An Tai is so (relatively) unknown is because of its awkward location. It’s within walking distance of Yuanshan MRT station, but not necessarily close-by or easy to find. What’s really interesting to note as well, is that this wasn’t the original location of the mansion — it used to be in Wanhua District, but was moved in the ’70s in order to preserve it, since buildings in the area were being knocked down in order to widen roads.

Lin An Tai was originally built a Mr. Lin, an immigrant to Taiwan from Fujian County in China.  Construction on the mansion started in the 1700s and finished in the 1800s as the family added several side buildings. We won’t go into too much of the history here, because there are English pamphlets and a bunch of information online (try here and here).

There isn’t a great deal to read about or learn at Lin An Tai, although you will find a few exhibits or interactive displays nestled within the rooms. It will be interesting to see if new information will be added in the coming years to make it a more well-rounded experience, though it is impressive enough to warrant a visit as it is.

The entire mansion and gardens (including the location, although that has now changed) was designed using principles of feng shui, which aims to create a harmonious setting where chi can flow freely by balancing five elements. Whether or not you believe in feng shui, it’s certainly true that there is a very peaceful atmosphere, and it’s fun to challenge yourself to see if you can spot how the elements of earth, wood, fire, metal and water are incorporated throughout the mansion and grounds!

Lin An Tai is a great spot to explore, whether you’re just visiting Taipei or living here permanently. The traditional Fujianese-style architecture is incredible and well-maintained, so much so that you can almost always expect to stumble upon a photo shoot of some sort. The gardens are tranquil and vast, making it the perfect place for a romantic stroll or a day out with the kids. For tourists, it’s a nice, lesser-known addition to your Taipei itinerary, and provides excellent photo opportunities. As a bonus, it’s within walking distance of this abandoned cultural park, and not far from Shilin Night Market, either!

What’s the vibe?

Large ancestral home surrounded by beautiful grounds super close to Taipei Expo Park. Lots of families and models in traditional clothes doing photo shoots.

Worth it?

Yes! Entrance is free, and the house is a beautiful spot that is relatively undiscovered by tourists.

Would you go back?

Absolutely. It’s a great place to take photos and walk around, and we can’t wait to introduce it to more friends.
