KGB: Kiwi Gourmet Burgers

This New Zealand style restaurant, conveniently located just down the road from Taipower Building station, has a huge menu of gourmet burgers that will appeal to just about any taste. In addition to the usual beef, chicken, and lamb offerings, KGB has entire pages in their menu devoted to vegetarian and vegan burgers.

They also serve brunch, salads, desserts, and a selection of imported NZ beers, all in an unfussy setting with quirky decor. Best of all, there are plenty of promos that give discounts for students, birthdays, and random other things (like tattoos?). It’s a fun and tasty place that’s worth checking out.

The restaurant has a relaxed yet eclectic style. There’s a long communal table running through the centre, and the decorations range from bare-breasted paintings to a samurai helmet next to the cash register (feel free to take a pic!). It’s a super cozy and welcoming setting to enjoy a beer and burger.

KGB serves a number of beers imported from New Zealand — like the Tuatara APA — in addition to local Taiwanese favourites like the Redpoint Disco Macaw, both pictured above.

They also feature a number of cool promos like birthday perks (valid within 3 days before or after your birthday) as well as weekday specials like Blue Monday (15% off 3 blue cheese burgers) and Tattoo Thursday (15% off if you have a tattoo). An entire page of the menu (see below) is devoted to student discounts!

We visited on a Saturday evening to escape the rain in a cozy environment. Here’s what we ordered:

The Big Blue Burger (NT$300) came with NZ grass fed beef, blue cheese, red cabbage coleslaw, tomato, caramelized onions, and bacon. It was an incredible mix of strong flavours that had us drooling. We upgraded our fries to add bacon and cheese for an extra NT$70, which was so worth it.

The Lamb Feta Burger (NT$300) included a minted NZ grass fed lamb patty, honey lemon feta, tzatziki, and shaved cucumber. Though it was a tad dry, the creamy flavour made up for it. Upgrading to garlic fries for NT$30 was another great choice.

The Swiss Mushroom Chicken Burger (NT$270) was moist, fresh, and tasty. We opted for a healthier side salad at no additional cost.

Check out their complete (and very large) menu:

What’s the vibe?

Relaxed and quirky NZ style burger joint with a huge menu offering everything from brunch to dessert. They have imported beers and a big selection of both vegetarian and vegan burgers.

Worth it?

Yes! The tasty gourmet burgers justified their NT$300 price tags and the upgraded fries were absolutely worth paying extra for. Though we didn’t cash in on any promos, there are plenty available to help keep the cost down. We loved the relaxed atmosphere and the menu’s huge variety.

Would you go back?

Yes, and next time with a bigger group! There are so many other burgers we’d love to try.
