Popular & Highly-Rated Taiwanese Comfort Food at Huang Ji Braised Pork

Huang Ji Braised Pork is a popular eatery near Zhongshan Elementary School that serves up some fast, cheap, delicious local food. They have a solid rating on Google and have built up such a loyal base of customers that it would be surprising not to find this place teeming with people.

The restaurant being so popular, you should expect a wait during peak times. We took a number, made our order, and waited in line for about five to ten minutes before being served. They have a good system in place, so the line moved fast!

While you wait, check out all the delicious food being prepared in front of you!

The inside is minimalistic but clean, and there’s a good chance you will end up sharing a table some other diners. Service is fast and efficient, and we started getting our food in no time at all.

The first thing we ordered was their cabbage (top left, $50), their bamboo soup (top right, $50) and some of their braised pork (bottom, $60). As you can see, the cabbage was quite different from what we usually get (stir-fried with garlic) and was almost a stew or soup. It was hearty and tasty, but if we had to choose, we might stick with our regular cabbage order. The soup, on the other hand, blew us away: it was very light, but somehow the broth packed a huge amount of flavour, and after a few spoonfuls we immediately decided to get another. If you like Taiwanese soups, we’re pretty sure you’ll love this one — and if you don’t, you should try it anyway!

Although we thought we’d found our favourite dish with the soup, the real star of the show was the braised pork ($60). The portion size wasn’t huge, but the meat was juicy and tender, and each bite was an absolute delight. We can’t recommend it enough. Both the lean and fatty meat were excellent.

One of the recommended dishes at Huang Ji Braised Pork is the lu rou fan, braised pork on rice ($30 for the small size). They are known for having a slightly sweeter, Southern-style version, which we had been very excited to try. To be honest, we didn’t love it as much as we thought we would — certainly not as much as other lu rou fans in the city, like the one at Tian Tian Li in Ximen. We wouldn’t recommend against ordering this, but it didn’t make enough of an impression for us to recommend it either. It was fine, but not mind-blowing.

The last thing we tried out was their fried tofu ($25). This was a yummy side dish, very saucy and flavourful, but we’ve also had similar dishes before that tasted around the same. Still, we enjoyed it.

All in all, we absolutely loved the soup and the meat at Huang Ji Braised Pork, and although the other dishes didn’t stand out in the same way that they did, we really enjoyed our whole meal. This is a great, no-nonsense place for some good old Taiwanese comfort food at great prices, so if that’s what you’re in the market for, you won’t be disappointed.

What’s the vibe?

No-frills local restaurant serving up fast, tasty, cheap food. The customers are mostly locals grabbing a quick bite.

Worth it?

Yes! It’s cheap and fast, and we especially loved the soup and the meat.

Would you go back?

Sure!
