Japanese Donuts & Coffee That Don’t Suck

Let us make something clear: we really like Japan. Both of us lived there in the past. We love the food.

But we’ve become a bit suspicious of Japanese desserts (often bland, lacking sweetness) and coffee drinks (usually loaded with sugar). So when we heard about Haritts, a boutique donut/coffee shop founded in Japan and exported to Taipei, we were naturally sceptical.

Much to our delight, we were proven wrong. This cafe, which is centrally located just down the road from Nanjing Fuxing station, serves great donuts and quality coffee beverages. If you don’t mind the Japanese influence, Haritts is worth a visit.

We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon in January and instantly felt warmed by the cute garden patio and cozy interior.

There isn’t a ton of space inside, so it was a bit crowded with people packing inside on the rainy weekend we visited. But there was still enough space for us to find seats at a large communal table.

Haritts has a wide array of donut options ranging from basic to… inspired. In true Japanese fashion, it incorporates fruit, tea, and nut flavours into its desserts. Of course matcha and curry donuts are on the menu too. The donuts are mostly priced somewhere in the NT$40 – NT$60 range.

They also have a great drink menu full of appealing coffees, lattes, and teas, which are slightly cheaper than Starbucks prices.

There’s a display counter packed full of freshly baked donuts.

We went for the caramel walnut donut (NT$50) and the special of the day, a chocolate donut covered in nuts (NT$60). Both were great choices. Though they were less sweet than your typical American donut, they were tasty and satisfying nonetheless.

Take a look at the caramel walnut’s sugary, nutty insides!

This almond latte (NT$130) struck a perfectly smooth balance between coffee and almond flavours — best of all, it wasn’t too sweet!

We also tried a basic Americano (NT$110), which was much stronger than anticipated.

What’s the vibe?

Cozy cafe with a cute garden patio.

Worth it?

Yes.

If you come with the understanding that the donuts are Japanese-style (in both flavour and sweetness) you won’t be disappointed. The coffee also exceeded our expectations.

Would you go back?

Yes.

There were so many donuts that looked good, but we couldn’t try them all in a single trip!
