Affordable Brownies Near NTU

Deep in the student-friendly alleys near NTU lies Coco Brownies, a cozy little cafe specializing in—you guessed it—American style brownies. After seeing them on Instagram and being suitably impressed and intrigued by their wide variety of flavours, we decided to wander on down one Sunday afternoon to try them out for ourselves. It wasn’t hard to find, and we enjoyed walking around some of the cutesy shops nearby.

When we arrived at Coco’s Brownies, it was bustling with young lovers and friends catching up, but we were able to quickly snag a table. Do note that there are only two standing tables and a larger communal table (which can fill up pretty quickly) so at peak time it can be a challenge to claim a space.

The cafe itself is decorated in a cozy style with an open kitchen that reminded us of being in a student cafe back home.

We were excited to try out the different brownies which, as we saw online, were promisingly diverse. They included flavours like Oreo, marshmallow, mocha, earl grey, and bacon.

They also have a gift box option, where you can choose from any six flavours, in addition to a similar gift box options for muffins.

It was really hard to choose, but we eventually narrowed it down to two brownies each (goodbye, diet): earl grey, whiskey cranberry (limited edition), sea salt and caramel, and original. We were dying to try out the mocha and bacon brownies, but they had just sold out. There was an option to add ice cream for NT$30 dollars, so we tried one brownie with and the rest without. We didn’t order any drinks, but were impressed at how reasonable they were: NT$50 for house coffee and tea, NT$60 for a latte, and NT$55 for an Americano.

As you can see the lighting wasn’t great, so our attempts at getting a good photo of our spoils were mostly in vain. We quickly tucked in, and found to our disappointment that the brownies were served cold, and not as flavourful as we were hoping for. It was hard to distinguish between the different flavours, and overall they didn’t quite live up to our expectations.

After a few bites, we asked the staff to heat them up in their microwave, which, judging by their puzzled reactions, is not something they’re used to doing. This is a shame, because the brownies were FAR better once warm, and actually quite enjoyable. We even brought some back for a friend, who agreed that they were better heated, but didn’t think they were bad served cold.

What’s the vibe?

Chilled out cafe with cheap drinks and desserts, and lots of flavours to choose from. The cafe is decorated in a way that gives it a very cozy vibe, but it’s not particularly insta-worthy. The upside to this is that you skip the insta-crowd, which gives the place a much more down-to-earth and relaxed atmosphere. It’s a great place to put down your phone and chill with friends to indulge your sweet tooth. We’d love to check it out on a rainy Autumn day for massive fall vibes.

Worth it?

Sure.

The brownies are super affordable and pretty good once heated, and the coffee is CHEAP. It’s also fun to go in and try out the different flavours for the novelty aspect, and a gift box of different-flavoured brownies is a pretty sweet gift (no pun intended).

Would you go back?

Yep—we decided that we would definitely stop by again if we were in the neighbourhood, and will definitely try it out again when fall hits. That being said, we’re unlikely to travel across the city or urge our friends to drop everything they’re doing to check it out.
