Cheogajip Korean Fried Chicken

Ever since visiting Seoul, we’ve been obsessed with two Korean staples: fried chicken and soju. Thankfully Taipei has a great option for getting our fix of both.

CheogajipΒ is a Korean fried chicken chain with 5 locations around the city. Though it’s on the pricey side, their saucy fried chicken is divine.

The Taipei Arena location overlooks the skating rink, so you can watch people wipe out while enjoying your meal.

They have an English menu!

Cheogajip does their fried chicken dozens of different ways, giving you lots of options: dry or saucy, bone-in or boneless, sweet or spicy. We obviously recommend saucy (who chooses the dry original?) and boneless for the sake of clean hands. In terms of flavour, that’s more a matter of personal preference. It’s possible to get a half and half order with two different flavours, but one of them must be original. Buzzkill!

Soju, on the other hand, is not a buzzkill. Cheogajip stocks multiple flavours ranging from 14 – 17.5% alcohol. We selected a bottle of peach for NT$280. This is MUCH more expensive than you’d pay in Korea, but still worth it in our minds.

In proper Korean style, we mixed our soju with beer to create one of our favourite (and most deadly) cocktails. The alcohol content is high enough to quickly get you tipsy, but it goes down so easily. Dangerous!

We chose the Boneless Yung Nyeom (NT$370) to split. That honey glaze tasted oh so good — even better than it looks.

They’ve also got other Korean dishes like spicy rice cakes and DIY rice balls with a glove to mix up your rice and seaweed. But it’s totally acceptable to stick to chicken and booze.

What’s the vibe?

Chain restaurant with takeout and lots of seating in-store. On weekend evenings it gets busy and there can be a wait!

Worth it?

Maybe. If you’re craving delicious and saucy fried chicken, Cheogajip won’t disappoint. Having said that, there are cheaper options in the city to consider. We spent NT$869 splitting a single plate of chicken, beer, and bottle of soju, which we wouldn’t do on a regular basis.

Would you go back?

Maybe. It’s on the pricey side, but there’s no denying that taste.
