Leafy European-Style Terrace and Drinks at Cafe Costumice

In a little cul-de-sac in Zhongxiao Dunhua lies Cafe Costumice, our new favourite day drinking spot. We were first attracted to its big and gorgeous terrace, but what sealed the deal for us is that they serve wine and beers as well as normal cafe fare.

On the Saturday afternoon that we visited, the entire terrace was filled up with friends enjoying glasses of wine in the sunshine, and young professionals catching up on work. The atmosphere was lively without being too noisy or disruptive. We couldn’t help but think how great this place would be for a day date! It’s classy but not stuffy, it’s gorgeous, and it’s open until pretty late. What more could you want?

So much space! The entire place was packed when we went, but we were lucky enough to snag a table that someone had just left behind.

The inside is nicely decorated and has a chill vibe, but we would still choose to sit outside. The terrace is the one thing that sets this place apart from the others.

We heard from friends that Cafe Costumice’s specialty is coffee, but we were in the mood for something a little stronger. They had a passable selection of wines — a couple of reds, whites, roses, and sparkling — that you can buy by the class or by the bottle. Most glasses are NT$280 and most bottles are NT$1300. The menu gives you suggested food pairings, which is a nice touch. They also have craft beer on draft and in bottles, as well as a mysterious “beer cocktail,” which we passed on. The beer was on the expensive side, but they had some interesting options.

We ordered a delicious white wine from New Zealand for NT$280 and a German beer on tap for NT$360. Both were great, but we felt that the beer was hugely overpriced. The local craft beers they have on tap looked great, and we regretted not going for one of those.

To go with our drinks, we ordered some olive ciabatta for NT$160. It comes with two sauces: one is tomato confit, and the other is porcini & truffle cream. Both were surprisingly good, and paired nicely with our wine and beer. They had quite a few options for snacks and light meals that looked great, including a cheese board and an antipasti platter.

One thing that really impressed us about Cafe Costumice was that they have outdoor plug sockets — at least four — so you can work outside on your computer. The little tables at the edge have the perfect amount of space and are slightly removed from the main crowd. We would love to get some work done here on a nice day!

What’s the vibe?

Hip, upscale cafe with a huge, leafy terrace. The crowd was mostly young professionals socialising or getting some work done. Lots of people were drinking, but it never got out of hand.

Worth it?

It’s a rather upscale place and some of the drinks are on the expensive side, but the terrace is worth the prices.

Would you go back?

Only for the terrace! It’s the perfect place to sit with a drink and soak up the sun. We probably wouldn’t come back if we couldn’t sit outside.
