Big Western Breakfast at The Antipodean

Craving a full western breakfast with eggs, sausage, and thick toast? As expats in Asia, it can be difficult to find.

But look no further. The Antipodean, located near Gangqian MRT in Neihu, is an Australian-style restaurant that knows how to do authentic brunch. It provides a wonderful taste of home in a pleasant environment with great service.

This restaurant is gaining in popularity, so we recommend booking a reservation in advance. We went for brunch on a Saturday and had to wait about 45 minutes for a table.

Thankfully, the staff was very accommodating and professional. Might we add they were pleasant on the eyes as well?

The coffees were good, with prices ranging from NT$100 – NT$180.

The Antipodean Big Breakfast comes with eggs, sausage, bacon, sourdough toast, mushrooms, a grilled tomato, baked beans, and a large hash brown for NT$320. Everything was nicely seasoned and met our expectations. We were really pleased with the quality sausage and baked beans, which are hard to find in Taipei.

Substitute meat for the vegetarian Avocado Big Breakfast, with beautifully prepared avocado. It will run you NT$320 as well.

We also tried the Smoked Salmon, Rocket & Avocado Mash on Sourdough Bread (NT$320). It was a solid choice but didn’t blow us away.

We’ve also heard the Açaí Bowl, packed full of fresh fruit, is a great option. It’s a little more expensive at NT$380.

Our biggest mistake was not ordering the Queen’s Breakfast, a huge platter of mixed brunch foods. We’d seen photos of it before but couldn’t find it on the menu. Turns out it’s a hidden menu item with limited quantity – ask for it when you go!

What’s the vibe?

Relaxed Australian breakfast restaurant with good coffees and professional staff.

Worth it?

Depends.

The Antipodean is a bit out of the way, located across the river in Neihu. You can expect to spend around NT$500 for a full meal with a coffee. But if you’re really craving a solid western breakfast, it’s worth the trip and the price tag.

Would you go back?

Probably.

Next time we’re really hankering for a breakfast from home, we’ll consider making the journey across the city. And we’ll be sure to order the Queen’s Breakfast!
