Falafel King is a small restaurant that used to be located in Shida Night Market but has since moved to the Taipower Building area. It offers a small selection of vegetarian and vegan Israeli food like falafel, pita, salad, hummus, and pudding for very reasonable prices. We visited both of their locations and were very impressed by their quick service, affordable prices, and delicious food.

Our first order was the falafel in pita ($85 for the regular size). The falafel was made to order so there was a slight wait, but it was so worth it: everything about this pita was awesome. The falafel were perfectly seasoned, soft, and crispy on the outside. The vegetables (you can choose what you want) were fresh, the pita was decent quality, and the tahini sauce drizzled on top tied everything together deliciously. The regular size was filling enough, but next time we’d definitely consider upgrading.

We also tried the hummus eggplant egg pita, which was also $85. This was really tasty too, but didn’t make quite as much of an impression as the original.

Next, we went for the hummus ($95 for 180g). It was magnificent: creamy and flavourful. Despite being warned it would only keep for a few days in the fridge we hoarded it and wept when it went off. Don’t make the same mistake we did!

Last, we decided to try the traditional pudding ($50). You can choose from date, rose or strawberry flavour, and we decided on strawberry and rose. They were creamy and delicious without feeling too heavy,  and we were pleasantly surprised by how much we liked it. We’d definitely try the date next time.

We really liked the food at Falafel King, and would highly recommend a visit if you’re in the mood for some quick, simple Middle Eastern food. The fact that it’s not pricey is the icing on an already darn good cake.

What’s the vibe?

A small store near Taipower Building run by an Israeli guy serving up excellent falafel, pita, hummus, and Israeli pudding. Customers are a varied mix of local and international.

Worth it?

Yes! We liked what we had, and didn’t pay too much. We would probably only stop by if we were in the area, though.

Would you go back?

Absolutely! The food was excellent and prices were reasonable. Along with the Sababa stand in Gongguan Night Market, this is firmly on our list of cheap Middle Eastern staples.
