Best Value Unagi in Taipei

Looking for delicious Japanese food at an affordable price? Head to 肥前屋 (aka “Unagi Restaurant”) in Zhongshan for some mouthwatering eel over rice!

This popular restaurant located in an alley southeast of Zhongshan station is usually lined up out the door, so prepare to wait for a table. At least there’s high turnover so the food is always fresh. We also noticed plenty of Japanese diners – a sure sign of authenticity!

The busy staff was attentive and our seaweed appetizer was served immediately after ordering.

We all chose the recommended set meal of eel rice with miso soup. The small size (pictured) is priced at a reasonable $NT250 while the large size costs NT$480. The eel was saucy, the rice was fluffy, and it washed down nicely with Kirin beer!

We also ordered the squid with salt and lemon to share, priced at NT$110. This one wasn’t quite as big a hit: the texture was too rubbery and it arrived somewhat cold.

Still hungry, we decided to stick with the seafood theme and split the fried oysters for NT$120. They were juicy and packed full of flavour, accompanied by a tangy sauce. This dish is highly recommended!

What’s the vibe?

Busy, loud, high turnover restaurant that can be lined up down the street. Sit down and get served quickly.

Worth it?

Yes.

We had a great weeknight dinner. It was tasty, inexpensive, and we were in and out quickly. The menu also has pictures and English so ordering is easy.

Would you go back?

Yes.

Next time we’re craving saucy BBQ eel, we know where to go.
